COACH SPENCER SMALL
GIRLS SPRINT COACH
Background Checked & Safesport Approved
My name is Spencer Small and I have firsthand knowledge of sprint training and technique both on the track and in the gym starting with my high school years as the top sprinter for three years including a fourth place finish in the Ohio State Meet big schools division 100m my senior year. I have continued to remain an active athlete and learn how to improve speed development while training my high school daughter in the gym and giving her some competition on the track. For me, being an athlete is a lifelong lifestyle. I still consider myself a sprinter and will compete in some Masters sprint events during the spring/summer 2025.
In addition to my sprinting background, I have 14 years of award-winning teaching experience teaching mostly math to middle and high school students. I have a passion for getting students to learn both inside and outside the classroom with a holistic approach, teaching the “whole” person and seeing each student as an individual. As a husband and father of six, I’ve spent many years and seasons coaching several different sports for my kids’ teams.

COACH SCHWANNAH MCCARTHY
ASSISTANT COACH
Background Checked & SafeSport Approved
Schwannah McCarthy brings a rich background in track & field to the Texas Collective, shaped by years of experience both on and off the track. Raised in the Cayman Islands, she found her stride early as a standout hurdler and sprinter. By 1998 and 1999, she had earned second and third rankings in the 100m hurdles in the Caribbean and Central America’s under-17 division. At the 1999 NatWest Island Games in Gotland, Sweden, she helped set national records for the Cayman Islands in the 4x100 and 4x400m relays—and brought home the first medal of the games: a gold in the 100m hurdles.
Her passion for athletics and academics led to her recruitment by Rice University, where she competed as a Rice Owl hurdler beginning in 2001. Her time at Rice reinforced her belief in the power of discipline, strong technique, and meaningful mentorship—values she carries into coaching.
After college, Schwannah attained her law degree at Vanderbilt University and served as a prosecutor in Dallas County and Jefferson Parish. Today, she continues to fuel her love of movement as a performer with Houston’s Urban Souls Dance Company.
Whether training young athletes or performing on stage, Schwannah leads with creativity, compassion, and a deep commitment to excellence. Her goal is simple but powerful: to help the next generation grow not just as athletes, but as well-rounded individuals prepared for whatever lies ahead.

COACH JADEN GERDING, NSCA CPT
CO-FOUNDER & ADVISOR
USATF Level 1 Distance Certified Coach, Background Checked & SafeSport Approved
As a dedicated runner, coach, and track and field enthusiast, I have a deep passion for both the sport and the science behind athletic performance. I place a strong emphasis on scientific integrity in my coaching, analyzing emerging research and performance data each year to ensure my athletes benefit from the most effective, evidence-based training methods. Still, I understand that science alone doesn’t define success—every athlete is unique, and I tailor my approach to meet the individual needs, strengths, and challenges of each one.
My journey in track and field began at Cypress Ranch High School, where I earned opportunities to compete at the collegiate level. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury ended my competitive career, but my love for the sport never faded. Instead, I found a new purpose in coaching—helping others reach their potential while continuing to learn and grow alongside them.
A pivotal moment in my coaching journey came when I met Harold Stewart, whose mentorship profoundly shaped my approach and deepened my understanding of biomechanics, performance, and athlete development. That experience solidified my commitment to coaching and to cultivating athletes who excel both on and off the track.
In addition to coaching, I serve as a Physical Therapy Technician at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, where I work closely with physical therapists to optimize athletes’ recovery, mobility, and performance outcomes. I am also pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a minor in Exercise Science, combining my passion for athletic development with a strong foundation in business and leadership.
In July 2025, I earned my certification as a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA-CPT), further enhancing my ability to apply scientific principles of strength, conditioning, and movement to athletic performance and injury pervention.
